How Do You Pick The Right Name?
Here’s an important question: How do you know if you’ve picked the right name for your cat?
After years of helping new cat owners find the perfect name, here are some tips we’ve picked up along the way:
- Is it easy to say? Some names are great on paper but tough to pronounce in everyday life. Before you become set on a name, make sure it rolls off the tongue because after all, you’ll be saying it many times a day once the cat joins your family!
- Does it fit your cat? Check to see if the name matches your cat’s personality and appearance before committing to a name.
- Say it out loud. Can you imagine calling for your cat with this name? If not, then it’s not the right choice. Move on and select something more appropriate.
- And finally, trust your gut. Ask any new cat owner: when you find the right name, you’ll know it!

My cat I got from the shelter, his original name was Porter House, shelter renamed him Sylvester. Kept the Sylvester name but would often call him Sly for short.
We adopted a strikingly handsome male tux back in ’86. He gave us 13 years of pleasure and loyalty, and laughable times. A big part of the fun was naming him. His handsome outline had us toying with names like Elvis, Roger, or Victor. But he was child-like, and starkly curious. George, or Dennis, maybe? I thought with his handsome looks, and thinking him an unusual sort of standout cat, I considered the name Stanley. But we settled on D.J. and it was I who applied the definition. “Don Juan”. Such big ears, and his head of the tribe walk also earned him from me the nickname of “Chief Big Scissors”. In remembrance of D.J.
How about Gatsby, Garçon, Gucci or Priest?

Considering our boy’s white paws/boots and being from Tennessee, we chose a legendary country music name, Boots Randolph. 12 years of pure joy before he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We just brought a rescue male tux home yesterday and are still deciding on a name. These comments have helped!
Our kitty who we adopted from the humane society was named Polo. We had to put him to sleep. We just got a new tuxedo kitten and we are calling him Tuxedo to keep with the “articles of clothing” names. In the future, I already have “Pashmina, Chino, Socks, and Cardigan” planned for kitty names.
Our wonderful Tuxie’s name is Baxter!
my tuxedo boys are named tom and jerry😂❤️
A good tuxedo name would be Kiri, like the cheese, as the wrapping would be the black part while the cheese is the white. Also, the wrapping has cows on it and being black and white would match a cow. If you like the idea of cows, the name Moo would also be good.
Hi! My cat Sammy and I had to leave my peaceful, quiet, beautiful “natural habitat” (hopefully temporarily) for reasons too long to explain. So in this “cement jungle” there are many stray cats. Of course I had to start feeding them. A big black cat I named Voodoo, a tiger patterned cat I named Zany (cause shes always doing silly things like prancing around on her toes, shaking her tail like a rattlesnake, and running around me in circles just to get some love), a REALLY big cat I named Bob (cause he reminds me of a bobcat(he only shows up once in a great while)), and a little black and white cat who would wave her tail violently back and forth and hissed at me the entire time she was nuzzling up to me for lovin (I found out later was the mother of Voodoo). She decided she wanted to be a house cat again, so of course u know where she is now. Lol! Being feisty and tuxedo colored I thought she might like a cool, warrior chick name. So I tried out Xeda (taking last 4 letters of tuxedo and making it feminine…pronounced Zeda) After 2 days of saying her name she already new it was her I was calling the 3rd day to come eat. U really didnt need to hear this entire story but thanx for letting me share it. Not too many friends in this place but the cats depend on me and love me unconditionally. By the way, Zany is working her way into the house too. Lol. She comes in the basement through a hole under porch and I have food and litter box for her on 1st floor. I let her up a few times a day. Only sad thing is is that she doesnt get along with Sammy and Xeda who are on the 2nd floor. She doesnt get along with Voodoo either. I’ll tell u one thing though, when I leave this crazy place….THEY ARE ALL COMING WITH ME WHERE THEY WILL BE SAFE AND FED AND LOVED!
My new tuxedo girl is named….. Tiki!
My cat’s name is Luna
Zeus
Katmandu is our tuxies name. Since he has gotten fixed and put on winter weight my daughters have started calling him Fatmandu.
I just named my new rescue Tuxedo cat Smudge.
We named our B&W tuxedo Maestro, as if dressed to conduct a symphony!
I didn’t know that my boy was a Tuxedo. Until one day I was out front watering my flowers. Well, this lady was walking on the pathway in front of my house. She said what a beautiful Tuxedo Cat you have there. I looked at her and said, is that the breed, name for these black and white cats? So it was that day that I learned that I had a very special cat indeed. He is extremely special to my husband & I. He was so big when he was born, I named him Bubba. And it is very fitting for this boy. I just wish that he was more loving towards me and my, husband. But all in all, I love him with all of my heart. I especially love to kiss on him, which he tolerates it for a very short time at that. But within thirty minutes he’s right back to sitting with me and rubbing on me. He has become quite the character, some of his antics cracks me up. Bubba, is the very best cat I’ve ever had. I’m so he is in my life.
After I’d been calling my tuxedo boy ‘Gavin’ for about a week, I finally settled upon naming him ‘Smokki’ (Finnish word for tuxedo), although I now pronounce it “Smokey” (and the ‘Bandit’ reference was also a suggestion I almost went for!)
I do love the trend of bestowing cats with more typically human names, though – I’m certain I’d have derived as much pleasure from naming him ‘Jeff’. 😆 But since Smokey has a tendency to strut about with some considerable degree of swagger, were I to choose his name again, in hindsight I’d likely opt for the ‘Gatsby’ suggestion – I’m *really* liking that (although, perhaps “Catsby” might be even more fittingly appropriate)! 😎👍
Hmmmm, Gavin Gatsby… 🤔
Male tuxedo cat names Lincoln (Link) and Leonardo (Leo) 🐈⬛️🤍🐈⬛️🤍
